We are pleased to share with you the Environmental Leadership Collaborative Publication, Leadership for Sustainability: Developing
Leaders for the Environment
This report offers a new perspective on the debate around the future
of the environmental movement - one that reinforces the need for strong leaders
who have the capacity to move environmental work towards a collaborative, innovative, future.
Most environmental groups
are focused on issues - global warming, urban sprawl, environmental justice, or biodiversity, to name a few - and are hard-pressed to keep up with the work that needs to be done. Burnout, lack of support, limited networks and resources, and sparse tools and training all make it challenging for environmental organizations to achieve their goals. Within each organization, however, there are committed individuals who create the environment and context for social change.
The Environmental Leadership Collaborative (ELC) believes that effective leaders spur environmental progress, and that these leaders - who come from all sectors, communities, nations, and levels of society - need to be equipped to build the networks, partnerships, and public leadership necessary to push for broad environmental change. This report identifies many of the critical skills, successful delivery systems, and opportunities for collaboration that yield more effective leaders, positive environmental outcomes, and a strengthened environmental movement. By presenting common experiences, strategies, challenges, and innovations of leadership development programs, this report underscores the value of investing in environmental leaders.
The ELC believes that leadership is an essential element of systemic change and that these programs contribute to positive environmental outcomes in a variety of ways. The richest proof we have lies in the stories of program participants themselves, who can mark out a direct path from their leadership development experiences to specific projects and collaborations that have produced lasting environmental benefits.
This report showcases these stories and promotes leadership development as a vital tool for spurring environmental change.
